See the fairground with its carousel
Gayly painted spinning round.
All the children love the carousel
With its merry circus sound.

When I was young, I rode the carousel
Dreaming that the world was mine,
Changing horses on the carousel,
And never noticing the time.

Step right up, Son, and take my place.
Choose your horse to run the race.
There's plenty of room for everyone.
Now the last race has been run.
All of life is just a carousel.

Spinning faster through the years,
People coming, people going,
With their laughters and their tears.
And slower turned the carousel
And I was a child no more.

Knowing in my heart my one ride
Would turn slower ever more.
The carousel is barely moving now.
I feel the tears upon my face,
And as I leave the painted horses,
I see a young child take my place.

Step right up, Son, and take my place.
Choose your horse to run the race.
There's plenty of room for everyone.
Now the last race has been run.

회전목마

유원지 안에 화려하게 채색된 회전목마가 보인다.
애들은 모두 흥겨운 서커스 음악이 울려퍼지는
회전목마를 좋아한다.

어린 시절, 온 세상이 내 것인 양,
시간 가는 줄 모르고
이 말 저 말 갈아 타던 적이 있었다.

아들아, 회전판에 발을 올리고, 내 자리를 대신 하거라.
목마를 고르고 경주를 시작하거라.
모든 이에게 자리는 충분하단다.
이제 마지막 경주가 시작되었다.
인생이란 모두 회전목마 같은 거란다.

해가 갈수록 목마는 점점 빨리 돌고.
사람들은 웃으면서 왔다가는 울면서 떠나갔단다.
목마는 점점 느리게 돌았다.
이제 나는 더 이상 아이가 아니었다.

이번 회전이 더 없이 느릴 것이라는 걸 잘 안다.
이제 목마는 거의 돌지 않는구나.
얼굴에 눈물이 흐르는 걸 느낀다.
목마를 뒤로 하고 떠날 때,
한 아이가 내 목마에 오르는 모습이 보인다.
