When You Are Old

When you are old and gray and full of sleep,

And nodding by the fire, take down this book,

And slowly read, and dream of the soft look

Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

 

How many loved your moments of glad grace,

And loved your beauty with love false or true,

But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,

And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

 

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled

And paced upon the mountains overhead

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

 

그대 나이 들거든

 

그대 나이 들어 흰머리에, 잠은 늘어,

벽난로 옆에서 고개가 자꾸 아래로 처지거든,

이 책을 꺼내 천천히 읽어 보라.

그대 젊었던 시절 부드러운 눈길과 그 깊은 그림자를 다시 떠올려 보라.

 

얼마나 많은 이들이 그대의 찬란했던 아름다운 순간을 사랑했던가,

얼마나 많은 이들이 거짓 사랑과 진실된 사랑으로 그대의 아름다움을 사랑했던가,

그러나 여기 한 남자, 그대 안의 방랑자의 영혼을 사랑했나니,

그 남자, 변해가는 그대 얼굴의 슬픔 또한 사랑했노라.

 

이제 붉게 타오르는 난로 옆에 허리 굽히고

조금은 슬픈 목소리로 나지막이 속삭여 보라,

그대의 사랑, 어떻게 달아나 저 높은 산 위를 홀로 거닐다가,

수 많은 별들 한 가운데 그 얼굴 숨기었는지.
